TLDR
TeamSnap is a solid general sports app built for recreational leagues, youth soccer clubs, and hockey parents. Split Track is built specifically for track and field and cross country. If you're coaching a high school running program, the difference shows up fast: TeamSnap has no concept of events, heats, XC race splits, or the way a T&F or cross country season actually works. Split Track does.
TeamSnap was not built for track or cross country
TeamSnap is the most widely used youth sports management app in the country. It does scheduling, availability, messaging, invoicing, photo sharing, and basic stats tracking across dozens of sports. It's well-designed and genuinely useful for what it's built for: recreational and club sports with a roster, a schedule, and parents who need to know where to show up.
That's not a knock on TeamSnap. It's just a different job.
Track and field and cross country are not roster-and-schedule sports in the same way. Track has 17+ individual events, heat assignments, relay splits, field event flights, interval workouts with target paces, and meet-day operations that require timing at multiple stations simultaneously. Cross country has summer mileage, course-specific race plans, time trials, and dual meets where every split matters. None of that is what TeamSnap is designed for.
Where the gaps show up for T&F and XC coaches
No meet-day event management. TeamSnap has lineup and assignment features, but nothing built around assigning athletes to specific track events, managing relay legs, or running a cross country dual meet from a phone. You'd still be on a clipboard or a spreadsheet at the start line.
No live split capture. TeamSnap has a live scoring feature called TeamSnap Live, built for team sports with points and scoreboards. It doesn't capture 400m splits, XC mile splits, interval times, or the per-rep data that matters in a track or cross country workout.
No sport-specific practice planning. Track and XC practice isn't drills from a generic library. It's intervals with target paces, rest periods, distance targets, and long run tracking that syncs back to athlete profiles so you can track progression across both seasons. TeamSnap's practice plan features are built for youth soccer coaches, not running coaches.
Built for rec leagues, priced for them too. TeamSnap's paid plans are structured around club and league administration. For a high school coach managing both a track and a cross country program, you're paying for features you'll never use.
What Split Track does instead
Split Track is built from scratch for track and field and cross country coaches. Every feature exists because a coach asked for it.
Meet Manager. Assign your athletes to events, capture live times and splits from your phone, invite a parent or volunteer to time a specific event or XC finish line, and share results with the team the moment a race finishes.
Practice Planner. Build the workout, run it live, and have times sync to athlete profiles automatically. Works for track interval sessions and cross country runs alike. Athletes see the full plan on their own phone before practice starts.
Athlete-facing workouts. Every athlete on your roster sees their assigned workout, logs their results, and tracks their progression over time. That's not in TeamSnap.
Roster built for running programs. Athletes are grouped by event specialty for track (sprinters, distance, jumps, throws, multi) and by group for XC. Relay assignments and XC lineup decisions live in the same place. The whole structure reflects how T&F and cross country programs actually work.
Team communication that fits a coaching staff. Announcements, scoped threads for specific event groups, parent access without full roster visibility, and read receipts so you know who saw the schedule change.

The bottom line
TeamSnap works well for what it's designed for. If you're helping coordinate a youth soccer club or a recreational hockey league, it's a strong choice. If you're a high school track and cross country coach trying to run practices, manage meets, capture splits, and keep 80 athletes and three event coaches organized across two seasons, you need a tool built for your sport.
Split Track is that tool.
